Historical Note

Barbara Levine and Stephanie Snyder in Snapshot Chronicles: Inventing the American Photo Album wrote that, “Album makers created lasting manifestations of both personal and communal memory, enveloping the past within the present, creating a sense of magic, authenticity, and hope for the future.” The contents of this collection consist of personal photographs and commercially produced cards that document the vacation of an unidentified groups of people. The places documented within this album include typical tourist locations in the Western U.S. and Canada and show the rising popularity of car travel to Western sites in the 1920s. Prior to digital technology, albums and travelogues, such as the one in this collection, were a popular way to document events and store photographs.

Content Description

The 1920s Travelogue photograph collection consists of 306 photographs which documents the automobile travels of an unknown group of people to tourist locations in Utah (Saltair and downtown Salt Lake City), Colorado (Pikes Peak Highway, Cave of the Winds, Garden of the Gods), California (Yosemite National Park), Oregon (Crown Point, Columbia River, Multnomah Falls), and Western Canada (Victoria, Banff). Some of the images are commercially produced and some are personal, probably taken by a member of the travel group.
