Biographical Note
Germaine Louise Fuller was born in Fort Sill, Oklahoma on June 10, 1945 and grew up in Sacramento, California. She received her BA from Reed College in 1967, her MA from the University of Oregon in 1971, and her PhD from the University of Chicago in 1984.
After teaching Asian Art History at a number of colleges, including Lane Community College and the University of Vermont, Fuller came to Willamette University in 1986 to teach Asian Art History.
In addition to her work at the university, Fuller was a Consulting Curator of Chinese Art at the Portland Art Museum, a member of the Chinese Garden Society of Portland and designed an exhibit of Asian Art at the Portland Art Museum that was on display at the time of her death.
Fuller served on the boards of directors for organizations in Portland such as the Classical Chinese Garden Society and the Northwest Regional China Council as well as working with the Northwest Regional China Council and the Portland-Suzhou Educational Exchange Committee to develop an educational exchange program agreement between Suzhou University and the Portland Consortium of Colleges and Universities.
Fuller died on March 31, 1994. Her best remembered contribution to Willamette University is the Japanese Garden, which was dedicated in her name following her death. Colleagues and students helped Fuller create this garden and she felt it was the work that linked her to Willamette University in a unique way.
