Historical Note

Martin F. Scanlon (1889-1980) was a retired Air Force brigadier general who also served as vice president of Republic Aviation. He took part in the Vera Cruz occupation and participated in the St. Michael and Argonne operations with the Army Air Service during World War I. Scanlon served as commander at Bolling Field from 1919 to 1922 and in the 1930s. Between the wars, Scanlon worked as an assistant military attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Rome and London. During WWII, he served in the Southwest Pacific and later commanded training wings in the U.S. He joined Republic Aviation as director of export and vice president between 1948 and 1957 when he retired from service.
