Biographical Note
Michael David Schwan received a Jacobs Research Fund grant from 2012-2014 and again in 2020. He recieved his BA in Linguistics with a minor in Asian language and culture from University of British Columbia in 2013 and an MA in Linguistics from University of Tornoto in 2014. As of 2024, Schwan is a PhD candidate in Linguistics at University of British Columbia.
Content Description
Research materials from two Jacobs Research Fund projects on Gitksan, "Morphology and Productivity in Gitksan", and a 2024 project on phonology and morphology of Gitksan. Includes audio recordings, transcriptions, and written materials on (Gitxsanimaax language) with the Gitksan or Gitxsan peoples.
Historical Background
Gitxsan, or Gitksan/Kitksan, are an Indigenous people in Canada whose home territory comprises most of Skeena Country in British Columbia, Canada. They are considered to be part of the Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest Coast, although their territory lies in the Interior rather than on the Coast. They have also been known as the Interior Tsimshian. The Gitxsan language, also known as Gitxsanimaax, Gitksan, Giatikshan, Gityskyan, Giklsan and, Sim Algyax, is an endangered Tsimshianic language of northwestern British Columbia.

Scope and Content: Linguistic research on "Morphology and Productivity in Gitksan", includes a USB drive with audio recordings and transcriptions (Gitxsanimaax language) with the Gitksan or Gitxsan peoples.
Restrictions on Access: Access to the materials in this collection for the purpose of reading, copying, or other use will be granted only with the donor's permission within 25 years of the date of the Jacobs Research Fund award (March 2014). After 25 years (March 2039), the collection will revert to UW Libraries Special Collections
Restrictions on Use: Donor and informants on the audio materials retain performance and literary rights.

Audio files are of elicitation sessions. Text files include elicitation notes, references for audio files, and metadata. Files are from fieldwork conducted in Vancouver, BC from January 2023 to March 2024 with audio recordings of consultants: Vincent Gogag, Jeanne Harris, Hector Hill, Ray Jones, Barbara Sennott. Speakers are indicated in file names by initials.
Biographical/Historical Note: Una Chow is a PhD Candidate in Linguistics at the University of British Columbia, as of 2024. Her research interests include acoustic phonetics, tone and intonation, speech variation, and computational phonetics. In particular, fieldwork in Canadian First Nations languages and experimental work in Sino-Tibetan tone languages.
Rachel Soo is a PhD Student in Linguistics at the University of British Columbia, as of 2024. Her research interests include speech perception, phonetics, and psycholinguistics. Outside of research, she is passionate about teaching and language revitalization and works as a Sessional Instructor in the Department of Linguistics at the University of Victoria and as the Digital Services Manager at Kwusen Research and Media.
