Historical Note

The University of Montana Forestry Club was established in 1914, one month after the School of Forestry opened. The purpose of this club was and is to "further forestry at the university and to provide discussion on forestry questions". The club originally met every two weeks and maintained an office in the original "Shack" (the original forestry building on campus) as well as the forestry building. Today the club meets every week in the forestry building at the University of Montana, organizing the annual Foresters' ball, sponsoring and participating on the University of Montana Woodsmen team, and volunteering at the Lubrecht Experimental Forest.

The University of Montana Forestry Club organized the first Foresters' Ball, called the Lumberjack Dance, in the fall of 1915, hosting the event February of 1916. Guests were required to wear woods and outing costumes, any individual who tried to enter wearing a suit and tie was turned away. As the years progressed, and the Foresters' Ball became more popular and elaborate, and the task of organizing the ball became more complicated. As a result, the position of "Chief Push" was created in the 1930s. This position is the head of the committee which oversees the events and planning of the annual Foresters' Ball. The Foresters' Ball has only been canceled a hand full of times, from 1942-1945 due to World War II, and in 2021 as a result of pandemic. Each year, the ball raises money for scholarships in the University of Montana School of Forestry. In 2013, the ball was transitioned to be more family friendly and educational.
