Historical Note

Seattle Gay News is a weekly newspaper aimed at the LGBTQ+ community of the Seattle and Puget Sound area. Established in 1974 by Jim Tully and Jim Arnold, the newspaper started off as a newsletter run out of a local gay community center. The writers heavily depended on local businesses for donations and supplies. In the early days SGN served as a hotline fielding calls from members of the community who had been kicked out of their homes and had no place to go. The paper also helped employ community members who struggled to keep a job due to being gay. From 1984 until his death in 2020 SGN was run and edited by LGBTQ+ activist George Bakan.

SGN continues to provide essential news, commentary, and resources to the LGTBQ+ community. The paper has a long-standing tradition of advocacy and independent journalism, dedicated to the voices and stories of the LGBTQIA+ community.
