Biographical Note

Charles J. O’Leary came to Spokane in 1905. He began working for the Spokane Police Department in 1928. In 1935 he assisted in the investigation of the Weyerhaeuser kidnapping case. While aiding a child injured by a fallen electrical wire, O’Leary was seriously injured in 1938 and retired from the force. However, he maintained a life-long interest in police matters.

Content Description

The collection consists of a reminiscence written in 1963 that includes his memories of Spokane, although the major portion concerns itself with United States history. There is also a collection of clippings related to the Weyerhaeuser kidnapping case, 1935, and a brief explanation of the case in O’Leary’s handwriting. Also included is a handwritten statement detailing O’Leary’s role in a prohibition violation case and a carbon of a statement regarding the case, 1932.
