Biographical Note
In the Summer of 1962, the Manoogian family was among the 10 million visitors to the city of Seattle during the Seattle World’s Fair. June and Jacob Manoogian, who were both deaf, met during World War II in Washington DC and married in 1945. The two were deeply passionate about traveling and by the time they passed away in 2021 had visited all 50 states and every national park.
From June 15 to July 7, 1962, June and Jacob took their son Jonathon and his cousin Skip across the United States from “coast to coast”, starting in their hometown in Maryland and spending significant time in the Northwest, to attend the 1962 Seattle World Fair, known as the Century 21 World Fair exhibition. The trip was originally documented through video on 8mm film. Footage includes attractions, events, and performances from the World's Fair and the family's car trips to and returning home from the Pacific Northwest. During their trip, the family stopped at many National Parks and Monuments, attractions, and cities across the country, spending time in Illinois, North Dakota, Montana, Washington, British Columbia, Oregon, Utah, Colorado, Kansas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, and Kentucky. The Manoogians are occasionally shown using American Sign Language or sign.
Jon Manoogian recalls their drive to Mount Rainier National Park, up past Longmire to Paradise Lodge, and seeing 8-foot snow piles along the road and a snow tunnel leading to the door of the lodge as a significant moment for him during the trip. The family’s experience in the northwest prompted Jon to settle in Seattle and become an adventurer. He transferred the film to DVD in 2023 and donated the original film and a copy to Special Collections.

Introduced by City Councilman Al Rochester in 1955, planning for the fair spanned the years 1956-1961 and eventually led to an extravagant opening ceremony on April 21st, 1962. The event continued until October 21st and became a lasting legacy in the history of Seattle.
