Historical Note

Oregon State University-Cascades opened its doors in September 2001, after a grassroots effort by Central Oregonians to bring a university to the region. In 2000, the Oregon University System selected OSU to build and manage a campus that would serve as a capstone to Central Oregon Community College, offering upper-division and graduate coursework towards bachelor's and master's degrees. When the new university branch opened its doors, it had more than 300 students and eight majors. As of 2025, the campus serves more than 1,300 students and 34 degree programs.

In its early years, OSU-Cascades was a unique partnership between OSU, Central Oregon Community College, and the University of Oregon. It offered both OSU and UO degree programs. The branch continues to offer a 2+2 partnership with COCC offering lower-division and prerequisite coursework that can be used toward a bachelor's degree. In 2016, the campus began offering full, four-year degrees.

In 2018, the Oregon legislature approved a bond to expand the campus. OSU-Cascades purchased a former pumice mine and former demolition landfill, bringing the campus size to 128 acres. The expansion is projected to serve upwards of 5,000 students by 2034. The campus is working towards a net zero energy, water, and waste campus.
