Historical Note

The League of Women Voters (LWV) is a national grassroots organization established on February 14th, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois by members of the Women Suffrage movement. Upon establishment, the League of Women Voters' main objective was to educate and support women on voting and their new role in democracy. Over the last 100 years and presently, the LWV has become more increasingly active on non-partisan issue advocacy, voter service and citizen education with the main goal of protecting democracy and empowering voters regardless of sex or gender identity. The League's national headquarters is located in Washington, D.C. and is run by a Board of Directors and Trustees as well as 30+ employees. There are local leagues in approximately 700 communities in all 50 states. The role of these local leagues is to bring the national league's values down to the local level, including voter registration, candidate education at the local, state, and national level as well as advocating and protecting democracy.

The League of Women Voters of Moscow is a local league founded in December 1952 and it continues to operate today, in June 2021. The Moscow league upholds the mission of the national league including voter registration and other citizen education. The Moscow League supports the activism of the national organization by defending democracy and the civic duty of voters and incorporates this structure to local issues that affect its community members. Moscow's LWV is also involved in various research studies that benefit and educate the public. These studies focus on education, childcare, land protection, poverty and other key local issues that serve to educate and inform the public. The League of Women Voters of Moscow is led by a Board of Directors, with a President and Vice-President and is documented as the largest league in Idaho with approximately 130 members.

Content Description

The materials in the League of Women Voters, Moscow span 1940-2007 with the bulk of the materials covering 1950-2005.

The materials include board minutes, agendas, annual reports, by-law, contact lists, presentation/convention agendas, speeches and presentations, letterhead correspondence between sitting local league Presidents, secretaries and other members, financial documents, budgets, ledgers, bank statements, receipts, newsletters from local league, the Moscow Memo as well as from the National league, The National Voter. A larger portion of this collection is educational literature, pamphlets and booklets surrounding local/national issues including, the SAFE Act, Pro Choice, campaigns to educate citizens on voting, local poverty, Mock Elections. There is also newspaper clippings from the local paper, photographs, slides, cassette tapes, VHS tapes, CDs and books.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The material from the collection had no specific order and were arranged by series and sub-series then organized in chronological order by date as it was being processed. The collection is arranged in four series: 1. National, 2. State, 3. Regional, 4. Audio/Visual. The collection is arranged in four series with the first having six sub-series, the second having ten sub-series and one sub-sub-series under the Issue Studies sub-series, the third having ten sub-series and two sub-sub-series under the Issues Studies. The final series was chronologically arranged and is compiled of all the audio-visual items. The contents of this collection are arranged chronologically with occasional outliers. Some folders are not in chronological order and instead are grouped together with similar titles. For example, all of the folders containing Moscow Memos are grouped together due to similar content.

Additional information about arrangement includes the choice to further sub categorize some materials into sub-sub-series due to their specific nature and larger quantity.
