Historical Note

Eugene H. Merrill (1908-1980s) was born in Salt Lake City. He served a mission in North Carolina and obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Utah. Prior to World War II, Merrill was involved chiefly with mining engineering, serving as chief engineer of the Utah Public Service Commission between 1935-1941. He married Barbara McCune Musser during this time. After the war, Merrill was involved in the communications reconstruction of defeated Germany. After returning to the United States, Merrill was a commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the only Utahn to have served in that position. From 1953-1961 he was heavily involved with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and later served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the United States Army. After 1966, he became a business consultant for private businesses.
