Historical Note
Eugene H. Merrill (1908-1980s) was born in Salt Lake City. He served a mission in North Carolina and obtained his Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Utah. Prior to World War II, Merrill was involved chiefly with mining engineering, serving as chief engineer of the Utah Public Service Commission between 1935-1941. He married Barbara McCune Musser during this time. After the war, Merrill was involved in the communications reconstruction of defeated Germany. After returning to the United States, Merrill was a commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), the only Utahn to have served in that position. From 1953-1961 he was heavily involved with the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and later served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the United States Army. After 1966, he became a business consultant for private businesses.

II: Correspondence
A compilation of four boxes of correspondence arranged chronologically. For the most part, original file heading titles have been kept. The section is split into family correspondence with Joseph Merrill- Merrill's father-, official correspondence, and general correspondence. The general correspondence was a stack of correspondence that Mrs. Merrill was unable to classify and has been separated into chornological order. The remainder of the general correspondence is a collection of separate folders of specific subject correspondence.

Description: Joseph Merrill
A collection of correspondence from the entire Merrill family to Jospeh Merrill. Letters to Joseph Merrill are all originals; Joseph Merrill's replies appear to be carbon copies of his original letters. The letters are listed chronologically by month through the year. 1944 and 1945 are contained in two separate folders as they do not comprise a large part of the collection.
