Historical Note

John I. White was a western folk music singer, and he recorded music under the pseudonyms of the Lone Star Ranger, the Lonesome Cowboy, Whitey Johns, Jimmie Price, and the Old Sexton. White’s career began at the end of the 1920s when he was discovered on the radio by the American Record Corporation. His discography included covers of traditional folk music written by European settlers in the western frontier in the late nineteenth century, as well as various Tin Pan Alley hillbilly songs. White’s most famous out of the 18 that he recorded in total were “Whoopee Ti Yo Yo,” “Git Along Dogies,” and “The Strawberry Roan.”

White’s recording career was decidedly short-lived when he began to lose interest in the corny songs that he was asked to cover. However, his passion for the history of folk music grew over the next three decades. After White retired in 1965, he decided to do more research on old folk songs and their writers in the American West, publishing articles for magazines.
