Biographical Note

Ludvig G. Browman was born in 1904, in De Kalb, Illinois. He earned his teaching certificate from Northern Illinois Teacher’s College, De Kalb, Illinois in 1924. He continued his education gaining a B.S. in Biology in 1928 and Ph.D. in Zoology in 1935, both from the University of Chicago. He and Adura Arnold Browman married in 1933 and together they raised four children.

Browman worked for The University of Montana’s Department of Zoology as a professor from 1937-1972 and professor emeritus from 1972-1986. He served as chair of the department from 1948-1956. He served on numerous committees and councils during his time at the university including the Faculty Senate, the Graduate Council, the Curriculum Committee, the Scheduling Committee, and the Library Committee. Browman helped found and served on the Friends of the Library committee from 1964-1972.

Browman involved himself in numerous public service activities. He served on the Missoula Community Hospital Board of Directors from 1964-1974 and as president of the Missoula Democratic Club from 1969-1973. He was elected to the Missoula Board of County Commissioners for one term during 1973-1978. While Browman was a County Commissioner he worked to establish the Fort Missoula Historical Museum and later served on the Museum’s board. He also served on the Montana State Board of Crime Control from 1974-1979, and the Institute of the Rockies board from 1978-1986. Browman died in May, 1986

Content Description

This collection contains records from Ludvig G. Browman’s service at The University of Montana and his various public service activities in the Missoula area. This collection is divided into three series.

Series I, Biographical Information, contains a biographical statement and list of activities of the Missoula County Commissioners for 1973-1978; Browman compiled both items himself. Series II, University Service Papers, contains university related records including Friends of the Library Committee meeting minutes, records related to multiple committees and councils, and Faculty Senate meeting minutes. There is also a file containing Browman’s letters to Montana Congressmen and their replies regarding nuclear power.

Series III, Public Service Papers, contains papers primarily from Browman’s term as county commissioner and a small amount from other public service activities. The major topics of these records are planning, zoning, infrastructure, pollution and environmental quality, healthcare, emergency medical services, museums, and involvement in local government.

Arrangement

The collection is divided into three series:

Series I: Biographical Information, 2 folders, 1978

Series II: University Service Papers, 4.6 linear feet, 1921-1977

Series III: Public Service Papers, 13.0 linear feet, 1970-1979

Custodial History

Materials were held by Ludvig Browman, his wife Audra Browman and Albert Stone until they were donated to the Archives.

Acquisition Information

This collection was transferred to the archives on at least three occasions by Ludvig G. Browman, 1978; Audra Browman, 1986; and Albert Stone, 1986.

Processing Note

The processor of this collection strictly maintained original order. The boxes were clearly organized between university service and civic service.

Separated Materials

Restricted materials containing employment records and personal information were removed from the collection. Copies of the Missoula County Courthouse architectural drawings were removed from the collection and added to the archives architectural drawings collection.
