Biographical Note
Keith A. Murray was a professor of History at Western Washington State College (now Western Washington University) in Bellingham, Washington from 1946 until 1977. Much of Murray's research and published writing focused on the history of the Pacific Northwest region. Howard Droker was a Seattle historian and author who also wrote about area history, including works on fishing and fishermen. Although documentation for this collection does not record the exact nature of Droker and Murray's connection to legal case "United States vs. Washington", both individuals appear on the witness list included in the court documentation in Box 3.
Content Description
This collection was compiled by Howard Droker and Keith A. Murray and covers materials relating to Native American fishing rights, mostly in northwestern Washington State, from 1886 to 1978. It consists mainly of reproductions of correspondence, government reports and published materials relating to fisheries, canning, dams and waterways, and the regulation of fishing rights. Locations covered include Snohomish and Skagit Counties, and the Skykomish and Frasier Rivers. Documentation from various Native American tribes is also included in this collection, including the Tulalip, Quinault, and Muckleshoot tribes. The collection documents issues relating to Native American fishing rights in Washington State in the run-up to and following the 1974 Boldt Decision, containing reproductions of court documents including witness lists, depositions, memoranda, and reports from the trial United States v. Washington St. Civil Case 70-9213.
