Historical Note

Prior to 1900, individual botany courses occasionally appeared in the University of Washington catalog; however, it was not until 1900 that the Department of Botany was formally established, with H.R. Foster serving as chair and sole faculty member. Science Hall (now Parrington Hall) was constructed in 1902 and the third floor, complete with lecture hall, lab space, and an herbarium, was reserved for the botany department. In 1904, the department jointly established the Puget Sound Biological Station (now Friday Harbor Laboratory) with the Department of Ecology. Masters degrees were first awarded in 1910 and the first doctoral degree was awarded in 1920, followed by a move into Johnson Hall in 1930. In February 2003, the Department of Botany merged with the Department of Zoology and the undergraduate biology program to form the Department of Biology.

Department chairs have been H.R. Foster (1900-1902); Theodore C. Frye (1903-1941); C. Leo Hitchcock (1942-1962); Richard Walker (1962-1971); Arthur R. Kruckeberg (1971-1977); Larry Bliss (1978-1987); Melinda Denton (1987-1994); and Joe Ammirati (1994-2003). Acting chairs have been H. Weston Blaser (1964-1965) and Walter Halperin (1977-1978).

The Department of Botany offered courses and supported research in the structure, ecology, physiology, classification, genetics, and evolution of plants, algae, fungi, and related organisms with emphasis on organismal, cellular, and molecular biology. Special courses and programs in the botany of the Pacific Northwest were shared with related departments.
