Historical Note

Smokejumping as a means of fighting fire on the U. S. National Forests began in 1939. In 1984 the smokejumper community, under the inspiration and leadership of John Harper, undertook a reunion celebration. All living individuals who were smokejumpers anytime from 1939 through 1984 were invited to participate.

Content Description

The collection contains documentation on the history of smokejumping and questionnaires filled out by the members of the smokejumping community. The collection also contains more detailed responses by those interested in participating in the oral history project that took place during the 1984 reunion in Missoula, Montana. Series II contains materials relative to smokejumping contributed to the K. Ross Toole Archives by reunion participants.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection is divided into two series:

Series I: Questionaires and other materials relative to the reunion, 3.5 linear feet

Series II: Materials donated by participating smokejumpers, 0.5 linear feet

Custodial History

The majority of the materials in this collection were created during or brought by donors to the Smokejumpers 1984 reunion. Following the reunion these materials were given to the Archives.

Separated Materials

Many photos contributed for copying or for donation were placed into the Archives' general photograph collection at the time of their donation in 1984 rather than into this collection.
