Historical Note

George Washington was responsible for founding and laying out the city of Centralia, Washington, which he originally called "Centerville." Born into slavery in Virginia in 1817, Washington later migrated to the Northwest, where he became a businessman and civic leader until his death in 1905.

This collection contains copied newspaper articles, court documents, and correspondence concerning George Washington, an African American pioneer settler in Centralia, Washington. The collection also includes a copy of Carol J. Lind's article "George Washington's Pot of Gold," which as published in the magazine "True West" in 1979.
