Children's Orthopedic Hospital and Medical Center photograph and moving image collection, 1911-1990

The Children's Orthopedic Hospital Association was founded on January 4, 1907 by Anna Herr Clise and started in a wing of the Seattle General Hospital. A year later the hospital moved to Queen Anne Hill in a house that had twelve patient beds. This house was called Fresh Air House. In 1911, a 40-bed facility opened on an adjacent site with the Fresh Air House being utilized as an isolation ward and nurses' residence. The new facility would add a new wing in 1928, increasing the hospital to 140 beds. In 1953 the hospital moved, with the help of volunteers, to the Laurelhurst neighborhood of Seattle. By the 1960s the Children's Orthopedic Hospital had established a relationship with the University of Washington Medical School with teaching and research opportunities. In 1997 the hospital became Children's Hospital and Regional Medical Center and in 2008 the name changed to Seattle Children's.
