Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Warren Street was born in Alhambra, California, in 1942 and he attended Arcadia High School in Arcadia, California. Street went on to Occidental College in Los Angeles, where he received his BA degree (cum laude, California State Scholar) in Psychology in 1964. In 1966, Street received his Masters in Psychology from Claremont Graduate School, where he also obtained his Ph.D. in Psychology in 1967. Street was a National Defense Education Act Fellow for both the MA and PhD. While in graduate school, he worked as a teaching assistant at Claremont before accepting the position as a visiting professor of history at Central Washington University for the 1967 summer session and as an assistant professor for the fall 1967 session. He and his wife Libby remain in Ellensburg until this writing (2012).

While at Central, Street was promoted first to associate (1971) then to full professor (1979) in the Psychology department. He held positions at the University as an Associate Dean of the College of Sciences, Associate Dean of the Graduate Studies and Research, Interim Director of Academic Computing, Acting Dean of the School of Social and Behavioral Sciences, Director of the William O. Douglas Honors College, and Chair of the Department of Psychology. Street published two books while at CWU and seven refereed journal articles. He served as an editorial board member for the journal The Behavior Analyst and as an associate editor for the Encyclopedia of Psychology. His presentations and service to both Central and the profession of psychology are too numerous to list in this brief biography. Street was also an accomplished cartoonist, and his papers contain some of his numerous illustrations as well as programs and publications at CWU.

Warren Street retired from CWU in 2008.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

This collection includes the following: Box 1 comprises biographical information on Warren Street, including applications for merit and promotion as well as multiple CVs and transcripts. Box 2 contains items relevant to Street’s career in service, including material on the founding of the Douglas Honors College. Boxes 3-4 cover Street's teaching career and comprise psychology exams and syllabi. Box 5 contains Street’s research and publications. Box 6 contains his correspondence. Box 7 contains materials on the administration of Central Washington University's Department of Psychology, as well as the university's Faculty Senate and the Douglas Honors College. Box 8 comprises slides produced by Central's Department of Psychology. Box 9 contains cartoons and illustrations drawn by Warren Street.

Please note that the slides in this collection were received prior to the remainder of the Warren Street Papers and were, thus, once housed separately.

Warren Street was active at Central Washington University during the Vietnam War, and some of his research and correspondence is, therefore, pertinent to the question of the draft. Street also oversaw and participated in the growth of computing at Central, a fact that is reflected in this collection. Street was the recipient of teaching awards and accolades, and his collection contains materials relevant to the pedagogy of psychology. Finally, the correspondence and service sections of this collection reveal Street's work as administrator at CWU. These sections cover forty years of CWU history at the professorial, department head, and assistant dean level. These sections also touch on Street's work with the Douglas Honors College (includes memos on the college's founding), the CWU Centennial committee, and the Cultural Archive at the university. Street also campaigned for better faculty pay, and his papers contain salary information and charts which he used to monitor the steady decline in real faculty pay at Central over his four decades at the institution.

This collection was organized to reflect the development and career of a professional academic.

Where dates are discernible on material in the collection, they have been added to the inventory. In much of the correspondence (Box 6), the original organization and folder labels have been retained (including labels such as “current correspondence”). Some material relevant to the CWU Centennial and the Douglas Honors College were removed and placed with collections under those descriptions.
