Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Under the auspices of the United Nations 1975 was proclaimed "International Women's Year." A world conference for women was held from June 23 to July 4 of that year in Mexico City, Mexico. As a result of the conference, the United Nations authorities declared a "Women's Decade", a ten year period in which women in all parts of the world would work to gain all the rights to full citizenship.
Following the Mexico City conference, the congress of the United States established the National Commission for the Observance of International Women's Year. Women's conferences were to be held in every state in the union before the first day of July, 1977. In keeping with the plan, most members of the Utah Coordinating Committee received their appointments from the National commission late in January of 1977.
Utah's first Coordinating Committee was held in the Salt Lake City and County Building on February 8, 1977. Gisella Tabor of the National Commission acted as advisor to help Utah get started on the mammoth task of planning the conference.
Elected to office by acclamation were Jan Tyler, chairperson; Dorothy Littrel, fiscal officer; and Suzanna M. Grua, recording historian. Katie L. Dixon and Sharon Keigher were selected to act as assistants in the positions of vice-chair. The vice-chairs divided the duties of helping to organize plans, gather data on available sites and expenses, as well as choose an acceptable date. Marilee Latta was put in charge of publicity and Maggie Wilde became the professional consultant to complete the makeup of the Executive Board. All members were to familiarize themselves with the procedures outlined in the national manual, as well as be well-informed about the national commission report, ... "To Form A More Perfect Union..." Justice for American Women.
The addendum consists of photos of the women involved in the International Women's Year Mass Meetings in Salt Lake City and Provo. The collection now consists of 44 black and white prints. The photographs of the addendum were, unfortunately, taped back-to-back. They were seperated and are now in individual envelops.
