Biographical Note

Hebeler was born to a pioneering Michigan family. She graduated from Michigan State Normal School and taught for several years in rural and urban schools across her home state. After receiving her master’s from Columbia University, Hebeler came to Ellensburg as the supervisor of intermediate grades at the training school. In order to continue her direction of young teachers beyond campus, Hebeler led a training center in Selah. When Central received a public building grant the Edison School that Hebeler directed was rebuilt according to her specifications. It was later named Hebeler Elementary in her honor. During her career Hebeler traveled the United States and Europe, learning about scholastic planning and establishing professional contacts. Hebeler was Washington state’s leading advocate for early childhood education.
