Historical Note
Frederick Ferdinand Ploetz (1914-1972) was a World War II pilot with the Flying Tigers, a group composed of pilots from the U.S. Army Air Corps, Navy, and Marine Corps. Ploetz is credited with destroying two enemy aircraft in aerial combat during World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross. He then became a career Air Force officer attaining the rank of colonel.
Content Description
Most of the collection contains Ploetz’s military orders and special orders (1941-1967). Also included are correspondence (1941-1967); newspaper clippings about Ploetz (1955-1967); photographs of Ploetz and military subjects (1941-1963); a U.S. Air Force ROTC summer camp schedule (1952); awards and certificates given to Ploetz; artifacts from Ploetz’s Far East duty; and foreign currency.
