Historical Note

The Mathematics Department dates back to 1893 under Osmar L. Waller as the first head of the department. Waller remained as the head of the department until 1919. The first female instructor Gladys H. Freeman was hired in 1921. The department was reorganized multiple times and Civil Engineering and Mathematics were separated in April 1919.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

This is an unprocessed collection. Any arrangement reflects either a pre-existing order from the records' creators or previous custodians, or preliminary sorting performed by staff.

Box 1 contains mostly administrative program files, correspondence, and memoranda, and covers 1969-1993. Box 2 contains files related to the Divisional Science Committee, such as meeting minute notes, as well as some personnel files. Files are sorted into subject files but beyond that are unorganized.

Location of Collection

(MASC STAFF USE) 2-38-01-7

Acquisition Information

This material, along with personal files, was originally transferred to WSU Libraries' MASC by Tom Lutz in 1996 and retained as MS1996-25. On May 22, 2016, these remaining records were broken out of the personal files and retained as UA2016-07.

Separated Materials

The Tom Lutz personal papers were processed as manuscripts collection, Cage 846.
