Historical NoteReturn to Top

Löwenbräu is a brewery in Munich; the name is German for lion's brew. While it came into popularity in the 1800s, some stories claim it has a history back to 1383, though 1524 appears to be more likely as an origin.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists of a single illustrated comic book, approximately 4” x 5.5”, titled on the front cover as Löwen-Wandelung (lion transformation). It is 12 pages, 2 of which are blank, and is printed in black, orange, and blue inks. It was a promotion for Löwenbräu beer, and was created in Munich; the creating artist is listed only as KOS, an identifier used in other Löwenbräu advertisements of the day. The booklet tells the story of a lion who comes visiting Europe, like the beer, and decides to become their trademark.
