Historical NoteReturn to Top
J. Edward Murray was a journalist, editor, and publisher. In 1938 he joined the United Press Association (1938-1948), serving as a war correspondent in London and Paris and as manager for Italy in Rome. He organized the Los Angeles "Mirror" for Times Mirror Company and was directing editor of the Los Angeles "Mirror" (1948-1960) and "Arizona Republic" (1960-1971). He helped write the Associated Press Managing Editors' code of ethics. He later worked for Knight-Ridder Newspapers and was associate editor of the Detroit "Free Press" (1971-1976) and publisher of the Boulder (Colo.) "Daily Camera" (1976-1982). After retiring he became a consultant, traveling throughout the United States and to many foreign countries.

The J. Edward Murray papers contain articles, correspondence, and business files from Murray's journalism career. There is also personal correspondence (1938-1992) in which Murray comments on his experiences as a war correspondent, editor, and consultant. In addition the collection contains drafts of unpublished books (including autobiographical notes) and speeches. There is also training material for Murray's consulting work, especially with Asian and African journalists.
