Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Two versions of a poster by artist Bernie Haynes Robynson, one dated 1965 and one dated 1971. The 1965 version is in color; it is titled " 'Good-Timing' Away Back Yonder" and subtitled "Being Some of the Amusements and Festivities Of the American Negro In Former Times." The poster features a large central illustration of two people dancing, surrounded by nine smaller illustrations labeled: Fish-Fry; County-Fair; Church-Suppers; Parade; Home-coming; Feasting; Minstrel Show; Barbecues; and Excursion Train. The 1971 version is larger than the 1965 poster and is black and white. It has the same basic layout, but the text and some of the illustrations are different. The 1971 poster is titled "Good-Timing Way Back Yonder" and is subtitled "Being Some of the Pleasurable Pastimes Of the Black American In Former Times." It has 12 illustrations instead of the nine on the 1965 poster. Six of these drawings are similar versions of those on the earlier poster: the dancers, the feasting, the excursion train, the fish fry, the county fair, and the parade. The remaining illustrations are different. They are labeled: Theatre; Hunters; Skating; Buggy-Ride; Ball-Game; and Competing for "Cake-Walking" Prizes.
