Historical Note

The Department of Bioengineering was established in 1967 and has grown in size, stature, and recognition under the leadership of bioengineering pioneers like Dr. Robert Rushmer, Dr. James Bassingthwaighte, and Dr. Lee Huntsman. The Department continues to focus on interdisciplinary research and education, including work in the health care industry, nanotechnology, biotechnology, modern biology, physiology, computation and informatics, imaging, sensors, devices and instrumentation. The Bioengineering Department is currently ranked in the top three by the National Research Council, and they receive more research funding from the NIH than any bioengineering program in the country. The Department is a joint product of the School of Medicine and College of Engineering.
