Content Description

The majority of the material in this collection is comprised of the index " Health & Welfare Services in Utah: a Chronological Listing With Historic References" and its corresponding files that Heber R. Taylor compiled in 1968 as part of a project to gather and list historical materials concerning the health and welfare field in the state of Utah from 1850-1968. The historical index provides a chronological listing of dates that corresponded with folders containing supporting material that Heber R. Taylor had gathered for this project. Some dates are missing in the finding aid because their corresponding folders contained only index cards that merely duplicated information already in the historical index. Records listed in the index are not necessarily in the folders; records in the corresponding folders are not necessarily listed in the index. Material for this index was compiled from the Social Work Library, social work organizations, and individuals who had worked in the field. The historical index was eventually going to become a part of a Utah Historical Collection that was to be located in the Social Work Library in the new Social Work Building that was completed in 1971.

The second series of this collection consists of one linear foot of miscellaneous papers from Heber R. Taylor including correspondence; magazine articles about teenagers, poverty and prison; miscellaneous papers from both Taylor and other authors; minutes of the Executive Committee of the Graduate School of Social Work; miscellaneous records; and newsletters. The majority of the correspondence and the miscellaneous records pertains to the compilation of information to be eventually included in the historical index.
