Historical Note

The Office of University Publications and Printing began in 1948 as the department of Printing.

Many terms historically used to describe individuals and communities with disabilities are offensive and were used to dismiss, discount and dehumanize these individuals and communities. Terms often focused on a perceived impairment and not the person. MASC recognizes the harm caused by these terms. We retain the language in this finding aid to document history and preserve context.

Content Description

This collection comprises the former print and negative file (from the department of Printing, later the Office of University Publications and Printing/WSU Press) of official campus photographers including Bob Bullis and Norm Nelson, covering academic and extra-curricular activities at Washington State University. The images record a wide range of events, people, and places around the WSU campus. Sporting events, ROTC ceremonies, and portraits of faculty figure prominently in the photographs.

When the decision was made to no longer retain these photographs within University Publications and Printing, it appears that they offered campus programs the opportunity to take accept photographs relevant to them, and what remained afterwards are what came to the archives. As a result, some photograph numbers are missing.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection is divided roughly in half with photographic prints mounted on WSU press file cards (boxes 1 to 65) housed separately from their corresponding negatives (boxes n1 to n73).

The photographic prints are broken into two strong series. The majority of these are filed by image number, which is loosely chronological. Boxes 1 to 33 contain image numbers 1 to 49999, which begin in 1947 and run into 1964. At that point, they began numbering over again at 1, and numbers 1 through 9999, covering 1964 to 1969, are in boxes 33 to 40. They then began numbering at 1 again, and 1 through just under 8000 comprise the final numerical set, 1969-1973, in boxes 41-43.

Boxes 44-65 are subject based. Box 44 is commencement photographs (and negatives) from 1960 to 1965. Box 45-49 are faculty photographs from 1960-1982. Boxes 50 to 57 include campus activities, events, and groups, campus buildings, and various departments from 1954 to 1980. Boxes 58 to 65 are athletics, from 1956 to 1982.

Boxes n1 to n71 are negatives, ordered by item numbers in the same manner as the first series of photographic prints above. The final two negative boxes, n72-n73, are faculty photographs from 1977-1983.

Series 1 (boxes 1-43) is filed chronologically, but listed here alphabetically by subject, with date and photograph number, to aid in discovery. Please note that a small number of entries in this series refer to prints and/or negatives that are no longer present in the collection.

Acquisition Information

The photographs of the Washington State University Press are believed to have been donated to the WSU Libraries in summer of 1983, when the photography facilities were moved from the Cooper Publications Building to the Holland Library.

Processing Note

Nina Deitz, Stacee Sager, and Jennifer Ross Nazzal, under the supervision of Trevor James Bond, Special Collections Librarian, rekeyed four boxes of file cards to create this present index. Kaitlyn Van Vleet redescribed the collection to more accurately represent the organizational structure.

In 2022, in response to evolving standards regarding the language used to describe individuals and communities with disabilities, Gayle O’Hara added a Historical Note to this finding aid.
