Historical NoteReturn to Top

Paul Collins (1891-1971) was a veteran of WWI and an air mail pilot during the 1920s. He was the first pilot to fly night air mail as well as transcontinental mail. Flying at night was revolutionary for the air mail service because it allowed for mail to be delivered much sooner. Collins became superintendent of Transcontinental Air Transport in 1929, thus beginning a career in airlines. He worked as vice president of operations for Ludington Airlines in 1930, leaving in 1933 to take a position as president of National Airways which eventually grew to become Northeast Airlines. Collins remained a part of Northeast Airlines until 1958, serving as its chairman in later years.
