Historical Note

In 1969, the WSU Alumni publication Pow Wow merged with WSU Reports and Washington State Review to form the Office of University Relations' official campus newspaper, Hilltopics. In 2001, Hilltopics was discontinued, and its role assumed by Washington State Magazine.

Content Description

The collection consists primarily of photographs of Washington State University faculty, staff, students, and visitors, as well as photographs of campus and off-campus buildings. These images were either used, or originally intended for use in, the Hilltopics newspaper.

Pencil notation on the back of some of the images refer to the Hilltopics issues in which the photograph was published.

Series 1 comprises the major portion of this collection, and consists of photographs of indivduals, organized alphabetically.

Series 2 comprises non-individual photographs organized by subject; group photographs are in date order by Hilltopics issue.

Series 3 consists of a small amount of historical background information on the University, as well as a electronic index to Hilltopics from 1970-1983.

Series 4 consists of sheets of contact prints and photographic negatives.

Series 5 is slides which had been held at the Alumni Centre and were added in 2016.

Arrangement

The collection is broken into five series.

Acquisition Information

The Hilltopics photographs were donated to the Washington State University Library by Pat Caraher in 2007. In 2016, two boxes of Hilltopics material that were received among WSU Alumni Centre materials (UPC 2015-08) were added to the collection.

Processing Note

This collection was processed by Jenny Zylstra in October, 2007, and re-processed by Lorelei Sterling and University Archivist Mark O'English in 2009.

Separated Materials

Selected print materials related to WSU's Phi Kappa Theta branch and the WSU Alumni Association were separated from the collection, and can be found in Washington State University Publications, 1891-2018. Alumni Office (WSU 24).

Individual issues of Hilltopics are found in Washington State University Publications, 1891-2018. Hilltopics (WSU 175).
