Content Description

This collection consists mainly of photographs collected by Dick Walker, a former ranger at the Moose Creek Ranger Station, from 18 different contributors. They depict wilderness scenes and activities in the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area in the early 20th century. Many of the photographs focus on natural areas, ranger stations, hunting and fishing, and firewatch activity. A second series in the collection includes interpretive material: several slideshows that feature the photographs, as well as an explanatory Editor's Note that prefaced a compilation album of the photographs.

Other Descriptive Information

These photographs have appeared in multiple forms. They were originally compiled as a 29-page photo album, each page of which had about 12 photographs. While on loan to the Nez Perce National Forest at some point before 2004, the album was digitized, producing 1200 ppi TIFF files that were clipped and embedded into Microsoft Word document files. The images were transferred as .doc files to a set of 6 CDs. The .doc versions of the images (with included captions) represent the CD folder/file structure, while the .jpg and .png files are structured according to the original photo "sets" (album pages).

In addition, an unknown source at some point printed out the photographs with the captions on the back. These appear to have been donated to the University of Idaho separately from the digital copies, and they were incorporated into Box 3, Folder 76 of MG 458 - Sources Related to the History of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area, 1896-1964.

Alternative Forms Available

The University of Idaho Library does not own the original versions of these photographs. This collection includes (in most cases) three copies of each photograph: 1 .doc file with the image and a caption, and 2 .jpg or .png versions of the image alone, each with different light treatments. In addition, printed copies of each photograph can be found in Box 3, Folder 76 of MG 458 - Sources Related to the History of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area, 1896-1964.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

Arrangement follows the set and photo order of the original album. .jpg copies on the archive drive appear in this order. .doc copies follow somewhat different groupings: folder titles (DISK-1, etc.) reflect file groupings on CDs that were committed to a USB stick, which the University of Idaho Library copied to the archive drive. The arrangement in either case is not chronological; roughly speaking, photographs are grouped according to the person who gave them to Dick Walker.

Acquisition Information

Donated by Stan Hall in 2021.

Processing Note

Digital materials were processed by Rebecca Hastings in 2025. Files were bagged with BagIt. Metadata was extracted with DROID.

Photograph titles in this collection reflect their captions, which were created from Dick Walker's original descriptions. In some cases, the archivist edited the titles in this finding aid for concision or clarity, but the full, original captions can be found on the .doc versions of each image.

Related Materials

Printed copies of each photograph can be found in Box 3, Folder 76 of MG 458 - Sources Related to the History of the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness Area, 1896-1964.
