- Original and typescript of Henry E. Hayes' diary, which covers his time gold mining near Nevada City, California, his coming to Oregon in 1851, and his activities making shingles in Clackamas County. Hayes (1831-1919), who was born in Hartford, Connecticut, eventually became a steamboat pilot, and had a farm at Stafford, Oregon.

Biographical Note
Henry E. Hayes was born in 1831 in Hartford, Connecticut. He emigrated to California during the California Gold Rush and mined near Nevada City. He traveled to Oregon by steamboat in July 1851, taking residence outside of Oregon City. He established a farm at Stafford, Oregon, and worked as a steamboat pilot. He was also an officer of the Oregon State Grange for 18 years. Hayes married Sarah L. Woodruff (1835-1891) in 1853, and they had four children. Hayes died in 1919.
Content Description
The collection consists of a diary that Henry E. Hayes kept from 1850-1852. The diary describes Hayes' time mining near Nevada City, California, his journey by steamboat to Oregon in July 1851, and his work making shingles near Oregon City, Oregon. It concludes in the middle of a journey Hayes took to the East Coast by way of the Panama Isthmus. In addition to the original diary, the collection includes an undated typescript copy.
