Content Description
The bulk of the collection consists of carte de visite portraits of Civil War generals and officers, both Union and Confederate. There are also celebrities such as Tom Thumb, the Sioux chief Little Crow, and the missionary H.H. Spaulding, as well as members of the Washington Territory government and pioneers who settled on Whidbey Island in Washington Territory. A number of photographs refer to George W. Beam. He was a pioneer and member of the Washington Territory legislature. In the 1850s, he and members of the Ebey family traveled west together and settled on Whidbey Island. The collection also contains a Civil War chessboard which depicts 24 Union generals.
Other Descriptive Information
In this collection many of the original notes of the Washington Territory pioneers refer to Whidbey Island as "Whidby" or "Whidby's" Island. The island was named by Captain George Vancouver for Master Joseph Whidbey after he circumvented it on June 10, 1792. When quoting their handwritten notes, these and other spelling errors were left intact.

Acquisition Information
The exact origins of this collection are not clear. It may be a combination of various smaller collections in the repository. Nine of the photographs in this collection refer to the Ebey family and George W. Beam. It is possible that these photographs may have come from the Winfield Scott Ebey Papers (Accession No. 127-1) or the George Wesley Beam Papers (Accession No. 2409-1). Additionally, some photographs are identified as part of the Meany Pioneer File (which forms part of the division's pamphlet files), the McMicken Family Photograph Collection (PH Coll. 498), or the "S.L. Crawford Collection." S.L. Crawford is referred to in the Charles T. Conover Papers (Accession No. 1052), which was formerly the Crawford and Conover Collection. 1 carte de visite (Captain Horton) donated by Dr. Richard Koch, 2014.
