Historical Note
Esther Burnett Horne (1909-1999) was a Native American school teacher and author. She was the granddaughter of Finn Burnett, a white agricultural agent who arrived at the Wind River Reservation in 1871. His son, Finn Burnett Jr. eloped with Mildred Large, a Native American woman from the reservation, and the couple settled near Eden, Idaho, where Horne was born. After her father's death in 1922, the family returned to the reservation, and Horne, along with two of her siblings, was later sent to Haskell Indian Boarding School in Kansas. Her experiences at Haskell deeply influenced her outlook and shaped her educational philosophy, which she documented in her 1998 autobiography, written with Sally McBeth.
