Biographical Note

Beth Halpern was born in Portland, Oregon, raised in Seattle, and moved to Olympia in 1984 with her husband and family. She has been very active in the congregation at Temple Beth Hatfiloh serving in numerous capacities including president.

1 cd and 1 transcript of oral history interview conducted on May 7, 2009. Halpern discusses the Jewish community in Olympia over the period of the late 1970s to 2009, focusing on the history of Temple Beth Hatfiloh. She details changes in rabbinical leadership, development of the religious school and a children's day camp, building construction, and the Temple's activities in the community. She discusses other Jewish organizations in Olympia including Congregation B'nai Torah,Chabad, and Evergreen College Jewish Students, as well as the status of Olympia's historic Jewish cemetery.
