Other Descriptive Information
Stereographs or stereocards consist of two nearly identical photographs or photomechanical prints, paired to produce the illusion of a single three-dimensional image, when viewed through a stereoscope. Stereograph images are produced by a special camera that has two lenses. Stereoscopic imaging is a technique that creates the illusion of depth using two 2-D images placed side by side; one in front of the left eye and one in front of the right eye of the viewer. Both offset 2-D images are then combined in the brain to give the perception of 3-D depth. Three strategies have been used to produce this effect: the viewer wears eyeglasses to combine separate images from two offset sources, the viewer wears eyeglasses to filter offset images from a single source separated to each eye, or the light source splits the images directionally into the viewer's eyes without glasses.
Content Description
Stereocards from photographers throughout the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Images of a variety of subjects, including people, natural scenery (mountains, waterfalls, forests, and rivers), buildings, industry, frontier towns and cities.
