Historical Note
In 1954, the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics was divided from the Department of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation and made a separate administrative department. This collection covers the administrations of Athletics Directors Ike Armstrong (1925-1950), Jack C. Curtice (1951-1958), James R. Jack (1958-1975), Arnie Ferrin (1975-1984), W. James Copeland Jr. (1984-1988), and Chris P. Hill (1988-2013). Major issues covered in this collection include academic standards for student-athletes, expanding conference tournaments, broadcasting of athletic events, compliance with National College Athletics Association (N.C.A.A.) and Western Athletic Conference (W.A.C.) rules and regulations, gender equity in college athletic programs, construction and expansion of athletic facilities, and the use of Native American caricatures as team mascots.
(Chris P. Hill was still listed as Athletics Director when this collection was processed in 2013.)
Content Description
The first 1.5 linear feet of material in this collection consists of meeting minutes of the Athletic Board which was renamed the Athletic Advisory Board in 1987 and later became the current Athletic Advisory Council in 1994. The primary function of this committee was to serve as a policy recommendation and review body for intercollegiate athletics that advised the President, the Vice President for University Relations, and the Athletics Director in achieving the Athletics Department's mission, though it had no authority to administer the Department's operations or activities. Among the issues included in the Advisory Council's minutes are budgeting, in-coming new hires, scholarship funding, gender equity, N.C.A.A. and W.A.C. compliance, and the daily running of the department. This collection also contains miscellanous material concerning games played by the basketball and football teams; records connected to the 40th anniversary of N.C.A.A. basketball victory of 1944 and the 35th anniversary of the National Invitational Tournament (N.I.T.) basketball championship of 1947; and reports that cover the issues of benefits of athletic programs to universities and colleges, adherence to N.C.A.A. policies, student fees, stadium facilities, and Title IX compliance.
