Historical Note
Washington State University's athletics program dates to the beginning of the school in 1890-1892, when Athletics was known as Physical Education, and has continued since. WSU's athletics teams participate in the Pac-12 athletic conference. Excepting a period from 1959-1962 when the conference disbanded and reformed, Washington State University has been a member of the Pac-12 and its predecessor conferences since 1916.
Content Description
The collection consists of photographs and other materials which had been held for years as research files in WSU Athletics. While individual materials may be as old as 1900 and as recent as 2013, the bulk of the material runs from about 1980-1997. The main body of the collection consists of sets of photographs related to the use, construction, and remodeling of Washington State University's facilities for the so-called "major sports": football, basketball, and baseball, plus track and field. There are a large number of images related to band and to cheerleading and rally squads as well. Almost no material from actual sporting contests is included.

Administrative Information
Arrangement
The collection is arranged in two primary series by material types: photographic materials and print materials. There are two subseries within the photographs: building/facility files, and topical files. In each series and subseries folders are organized alphabetically, excepting some "related facilities" which are filed with same-sport facilities (for example, a folder on Rogers Field, the football predecessor to Martin Stadium, is files at the end of the Martin Stadium materials). No serious attempt has been made to organize materials within each folder; for the most part they remain in the order received. Photographic formats include photographic prints, contact sheets, negatives, slides, and even CDs of images.
Acquisition Information
The materials in this collection were transferred to the Washington State University Libraries' Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (MASC) on July 13, 2015 by Linda Chalich, Assistant Director at Washington State University Athletics. The materials were accessioned as UPC 2015-09.
Processing Note
This collection was processed by University Archivist Mark O’English in November of 2015.
Separated Materials
A number of items with no Athletics ties were removed during processing and interfiled into WSU 3 (WSU Buildings Historic Photographs) or WSU 4 (WSU Historic Photographs Subject File).
Related Materials
Despite this collection coming from WSU Athletics, very little material depicting actual sporting contests is included. For those type of materials, you'll probably want to look in some of WSU MASC's other collections, primarily:
PC 1 (WSU Publications and Printing / WSU Press Photographs, 1948-1983)
PC 4 (WSU Photographs Subject File, 1892-)
PC 115 (WSU Publications and Printing Photographs, 1983-1996)
Additional facilities photographs can be found in PC 3, the WSU Historic Buildings Photographs Subject File.
