Content Description

The Melvin Jacobs Collection consists of a letter of thanks to Melvin Jacobs from Whitman archivist Lawrence Dodd, articles about Melvin Jacobs Sr., a historical record of the Greenland campaign at Comanche Bay, and a National Geographic article titled "Americans Stand Guard in Greenland." This collection, which dates from 1934 through 1990, also contains a map of Greenland locating the weather station, letters, a poem, messages, certificate from Harry, a personnel roster of the Greenland weather station Comanche Bay Weather Station records, three handwritten diaries, and three scrapbook of Melvin Jacob's time in Greenland.

Biographical Note

Melvin Jacobs Jr. was born in 1918 to Maybelle and Melvin C. Jacobs. He served as a noncommissioned officer in charge of the Greenland Campaign at Comanche Bay from September 9, 1944 to October 2, 1945. he taught science and athletics at Whitman College after he graduated in 1939. He was a member of Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and an avid basketball player. After his time in Greenland, he worked as an engineer at General Electronics Corporation in the Chemical Processing Department. He was married to Betty Kirkman Jacobs and had two children, David and Janet Jacobs.
