Historical Note

The buildings of Washington State University have traditionally been managed by two departments. Facilities Planning is primarily concerned with construction, while the Physical Plant is concerned with maintenance, repair, renovation and minor capital construction. While each department has evolved over time and held variety of names, by 2010 they were merged as Facilities Services.

Many terms historically used to describe individuals and communities with disabilities are offensive and were used to dismiss, discount and dehumanize these individuals and communities. Terms often focused on a perceived impairment and not the person. MASC recognizes the harm caused by these terms. We retain the language in this finding aid to document history and preserve context.

Content Description

The collection contains architectural drawings of Washington State University buildings from 1897-1998. Most of these were created by and for WSU's Physical Plant, maintenance, repair, and minor renovation works.

Prior to transfer to MASC, some of the materials were exposed to heat and humidity and began to mold. MASC has discarded these after reproducing them, either as photocopies, generally smaller items, or digital scans, generally large maps. At the moment, "digital" maps are only available in person at MASC.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The drawings are arranged in one sequence, ordered by the Building Number system of the University. Whithin that, original drawing numbers are used to establish sequences. Materials which don't fit neatly into one building (or buildings which lack numbers) are at the end of the collection, in a subject-based order. Something listed as a copy is a photocopy; generally these were smaller items and the reproductions have been interfiled with or next to the regular items. Something listed as digital will include a filename; these are generally large maps which have been scanned and had the originals discarded.

Acquisition Information

The architectural drawings comprising this group of records have been drawn together from various sources, chiefly from the WSU Physical Plant. The drawings were received by the Libraries on many separate occasions. They have been arranged so as to accommodate future accruals.

At some point prior to 2008, the materials from UA91-23 (received from the Physical Plant's Rick Ward on July 3, 1991) were incorporated, described as nine rolls of "maps, sewer lines, and the Fairway projects" and covering about 1940-1980.

In July of 2010, a set of Carpenter Hall blueprints (UA 92-16) was added to the Carpenter Hall folder (bldg. 20).

Additional materials were incorporated in 2016 when the collection was redescribed and reorganized.

Processing Note

Initial arrangement and description of the documents was by Robert Hadlow, March-April, 1991. Cleaning of valuable at-risk items was conducted by Jennifer Jouas in 2010. Timothy Mace photocopied small items in 2011. Preservation digitization and description of large items was conducted by Evelyn Moos in 2015, with the final two dozen items being digitized in 2018 by James Feller. Hamid Esmaeillou and Kaitlyn Van Vleet redescribed and reorganized the collection in 2016.

In 2022, in response to evolving standards regarding the language used to describe individuals and communities with disabilities, Gayle O’Hara added a Historical Note to this finding aid.
