Biographical Note
Lewis Richard Cheadle was born in 1864 near Lebanon, Oregon. He lived in Lebanon, in the area of Portland, Oregon, and in Roseburg, Oregon. He spent most of his life as a farmer, but in the early 1890s operated a grocery store in the Albina neighborhood of Portland with his brother, George W. Cheadle (1870-1905), and then worked as an agent for the Evening Telegram in Portland. He married Lina Krieg (1863-1958) in 1889; the couple had two children, Richard F. Cheadle and Lois C. Doughton. Lewis R. Cheadle died in 1935.
J. R. Cheadle was possibly a relative of Lewis R. Cheadle, but the exact relationship is unclear, as he was not one of Lewis R. Cheadle's siblings.

Content Description
The collection consists of seven ledgers. Three of these were kept by J. R. Cheadle; two were kept by Lewis R. Cheadle, whose exact relationship to J. R. Cheadle is unknown; one was kept by either Lewis R. Cheadle or a relative; and one was kept by Lewis R. Cheadle's brother-in-law, Frederick Krieg. All of J. R. Cheadle's ledgers and one of Lewis R. Cheadle's ledgers were issued by the Portland Business College in Portland, Oregon, indicating that the entries in them may have been done as part of coursework there. Some entries in the ledger kept by either Lewis R. Cheadle or a relative and possibly most or all of the entries in Krieg's ledger relate to Cheadle Bros., a grocery store that Lewis R. Cheadle and his brother, George W. Cheadle, operated in the Albina neighborhood of Portland.
