Historical Note
The American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF) was established in 1919 in Chicago and is the largest farmers' organization in the United States. They aim to provide farmers and ranchers with a voice to establish policies that impact their lives. The Montana branch of the American Farm Bureau Federation, the Montana Farm Bureau Federation (MFBF), was also founded in 1919. Under the larger state umbrella, counties and cities founded local level bureaus to amplify grassroots organization. According to the Montana Farm Bureau Federation, they worked to make local farming and ranching more profitable and to improve farming communities and their surrounding environments.
The Missoula County Farm Bureau was a county-level organization. The organization was run by men and women. They were involved in local politics and worked to better not only the farm and ranch communities, but also the broader community as a whole. The Missoula County branch of the farm bureau was responsible for maintaining records for all local level branches within the county and for collecting the dues of all branches yearly. The Missoula County bureau elected officials yearly, including President and Vice President, as well as a separate Associated Women of the Missoula County Farm Bureau President and Vice President. They hosted community events including festivals and dances, as well as meetings pertaining to the AFBF's agenda. It is likely that the Missoula County Farm Bureau was founded in January of 1920, shortly after the establishment of the Montana State Farm Bureau, and ceased operations sometime in the 1950s.
Content Description
Most of the materials in the Missoula County Farm Bureau Records are administrative records and correspondence between the Missoula County Farm Bureau and city and state officials. The collection contains an assortment of materials related to not only the Missoula County Farm Bureau itself but also to bureaus within the area. The Missoula County Farm Bureau collected all membership cards for bureaus within their county, including those of Missoula, Hellgate, Nine Mile, Potomac, Frenchtown, Cold Springs, Orchard Homes, Lolo, Clinton, and Jocko. The membership cards in this collection (1941-1949) include the dates, names, occupations, acreage owned and addresses of new members. The collection also contains record books from the Hellgate Farm Bureau, including meeting minutes, meeting attendance records, and agenda lists documenting the local bureau's areas of interest within their community.
In October of 1945 a fire at the home of the Stahl family in Hellgate, Montana destroyed many of the Missoula County Farm Bureau records. In that same year, the President of the Missoula County Farm Bureau, Mr. Edouard Deschamps, was elected to the Executive Committee of the Montana State Farm Bureau. As a result, materials in the collection throughout the late 1940s represent activities of both the Missoula County Farm Bureau and the Montana State Farm Bureau.
