Historical Background

The Alutiiq / Sugpiaq people are one of eight Alaska Native peoples. They have inhabited the coastal environments of south-central Alaska for over 7,500 years. Their traditional homelands include Prince William Sound, the outer Kenai Peninsula, the Kodiak Archipelago, and the Alaska Peninsula. Here people lived in coastal communities and hunted sea mammals from skin-covered boats.

Alutiiq people share many cultural practices with the other coastal peoples, particularly the Unangan / Aleut of the Aleutian Chain and the Yup’ik of the Bering Sea coast. Anthropologists believe these cultural similarities reflect a distant but common ancestry. At the time of European colonization, there were distinct regional groups of Alutiiq / Sugpiaq people, each speaking a slightly different dialect of the Alutiiq language.

Alutiiq ” is a contemporary term describing the indigenous people of the area stretching from Chignik Lagoon on the Alaska Peninsula up to the outer Kenai coast and extending to Prince William Sound. It stems from “ Aleut ”, (meaning “coastal dweller”) used by Russians encountering coastal Alaskans in the 1740s. Today, Kodiak’s Native people use a variety of self-designators. There is no one correct term. Many Elders prefer Aleut, a term they were taught as children. Today, others choose Alutiiq or Sugpiaq . (Source: Alutiiq Museum and Archaeological Repository . Web. Content Description

Tape recorded field research, field notes and transcripts associated with the tapes, final research report; 1992. Linguistic research in Alutiiq at Chignik Lake, Perryville, and Ivanof Bay, Alaska. Consultants include Polly Shangin, Ralph A. Phillips, Olga Kalmakoff, Joe Kalmakoff, Christine Martin, Ignatius Kosbruk, Frieda Kosbruk.

“Starring songs” (similar to caroling songs) were recorded in Chignik Lake, Alaska during the Christmas season (Russian Orthodox) and a tape of Alutiiq songs and stories was made. Six additional tapes were recorded between March and April in Perryville, Alaska. Conversations with Ralph A. Phillips and Polly Shangin recounted personal and regional history; conversations with Ignatius and Frieda includes anecdotes about memorable people as well as traditional unigkuat (traditional stories). Field research conducted at Ivanof Bay yielded tapes (in English) that documented the family and oral histories of Olga Kalmakoff and her son, Joe. With the help of local bilingual elders, Patricia was able to obtain translations of all Alutiiq texts and began the process of transcribing the texts in Alutiiq.

Researcher’s note on transcriptions: “Some have not been checked against dictionary spellings; in some cases, the texts contained words not in the small dictionaries that exist for the language; and all g’s and r’s, whether voiced or voiceless, are written as single letters (the notation for voiced sounds).”
