Historical Note

A State School of Mines was formally established at the University of Utah in 1901. It was renamed the School of Mines and Engineering in 1913 and offered degrees in chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical, and mining engineering as well as metallurgy. The college was divided into the College of Mines and Mineral Industries and the College of Engineering in 1948. The Departments of Fuels Engineering, Geology and Geophysics, and Meteorology were added to the College of Mines and Mineral Industries that same year. The College was renamed the College of Mines and Earth Sciences in 1988 as a reflection of the importance of its earth sciences components to the its educational mission.
