Historical Note

Palouse Peace Journal (PPJ) was a monthly publication in the Pullman-Moscow area, coedited by David Ronald Drake and Paul McGeady. The publication ran from Feb. 1991 to March 1993, amassing 15 issues, including one unnumbered special report. At its peak, circulation of the publication was over 1000. The editors started writing during the Gulf War, as they were frustrated with the lack of diverse coverage. “People need as much information as possible before making judgments on complicated issues,” Drake stated in the Evergreen in 1992. PPJ prided itself on providing perspectives that were not discussed in the mainstream media. Issues tackled in the PPJ included war/peace, environmentalism, conservation, sexuality, and civil rights.

Support for the publication came from local businesses of the Palouse, some being regular columnists. Brused Books, Pterodactyl Tape and Disc, Twice Sold Tales, Moscow Food Co-Op, and many others were regular advertisers. Katherine Sprague, owner of Safari Pearl, was a regular columnist under the pseudonym “Cranky Dyke”. The publication could be found at these aforementioned businesses as well. Students, professors, and members of the general Palouse community rallied behind PPJ; it was a publication that embraced perspectives that were considered deviant for the time.

Content Description

The collection contains original copies of the PPJ issues, along with draft articles, graphics, and publications and documentation that the editors used to make their arguments. Copies of other hard-to-find publications, such as The Student Insurgent, from Eugene, OR, are also included. There is a heavy focus on environmental issues within supporting materials. One folder chronicles the imprisonment of WSU graduate student Rik Scarce, while another provides updates to the then proposed Idaho National Engineering Lab production reactor.

The collection consists of three series. Series 1 contains PPJ issues 1-14, along with published and unpublished articles, and other materials involved in production of the journals. Article drafts that could be identified were filed with their respective issue. All others were placed in an unidentified articles folder, respecting the editor’s original arrangement. Supporting materials are foldered alphabetically by material types. Series 2 consists of issues folders, some with materials closely tied to specific articles, and some more general. These are sorted alphabetically by topic. Box 3 contains other relatively rare publications, most regional, that relate to the topics discussed in PPJ; these are filed alphabetically by title.
