Richard "Dick" Burton (1940-2020) was a Salt Lake City photographer and philanthropist who, with his wife, established the Dick and Timmy Burton Foundation for philanthropic purposes. This collection contains black-and-white and color photographs taken by Burton between 1970 and 2015 with subjects ranging from nature photographs and portraits of people.

Biographical Note

Richard R. "Dick" Burton was born on February 8, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Maybelle Covey and R. Harold Burton. He attended the University of Utah Business College, where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity. After graduating from college, Burton served in the United States Army Reserves in the Medical Evacuation Corps; he was activated to serve in the Berlin Crisis of 1958-1959. Upon his return to Salt Lake City, Burton married Susan "Timmy" Dinwoody on June 30, 1962.

Burton worked in investment at First Security Bank. Beyond this career, he was a passionate photographer. He studied photography at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Burton taught photography at Utah State University and at the Salt Lake Art Center. He was a skier, mountain climber, motorcyclist, and aviator, and took many photographs during his outdoor pursuits. In addition to his photography, Burton was a longtime philanthropist. He served as Director of the R. Harold Burton Foundation. Later, the Burtons established the Dick and Timmy Burton Foundation.

Timmy Burton died on July 6, 2018. Dick Burton died on December 29, 2020.

The Richard "Dick" Burton photograph collection consists of 8 oversized boxes containing 324 black-and-white and color photograph prints created by Dick Burton between 1970 and 2015. Subjects include beaches, landscapes, women, and other nature photography.
