Historical Note

The Ninety-Nines, Incorporated

The Ninety-Nines, Incorporated, is a women's pilots organization. It was formed in 1929, and named for the number of charter members. The Ninety-Nines is dedicated to the promotion of general aviation, especially for women. They have developed into a large organization performing many services for the betterment of aviation. Members of the Ninety-Nines served in the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASPS) during the Second World War. Currently, members of the Ninety-Nines participate in the Civil Air Patrol (CAP); emergency air lifts; perform needed air markings on runways and building roofs; and give classes on aviation. The organization also raises funds for aviation related causes, including the Amelia Earhart scholarship, named for the first president of the Ninety-Nines.

Incorporated in 1950, the Ninety-Nines now has over 2,000 members in the United States and in twenty-two countries around the world.

Historical Note

Northwest Section of the Ninety-Nines, Incorporated and Ninety-Nines Intermountain Chapter

The Northwest Section of the Ninety-Nines, Incorporated, was first chartered in 1930, but lack of members and the difficulty of communication resulted in relatively little activity prior to 1940. The Washington Chapter, the first chapter in the Northwest, was organized in that same year, 1930. Today, the Section has grown to sixteen chapters, including the Eastern Washington Chapter, chartered in 1965. The Eastern Washington Chapter expanded to include Eastern Washington and Northwestern Idaho, and was renamed the Intermountain Chapter.
