Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Lyle Leroy Winegar was born in 1926 in Scottsbluff, Nebraska to Oletha and Guy Winegar, and lived near Alliance, Nebraska until 1937, when his father began working at Black Canyon power plant near Emmett, Idaho. Lyle attended Emmett high school, graduating in 1944. He joined the Army Air Corps in early 1945 and was released from service after the German surrender. In the 1947-1948 school year, Winegar started his education at WSC in the school of Engineering. During his time at WSC he joined the WSC Fire Department as a student volunteer firefighter and was a part of many dance groups at the school, including Do-si-do and Orchesis.

While a student at WSC, Lyledated a woman named Jean Matthew. Before earning his degree, he moved to Seattle and started working for Boeing. He met Jeanne Hinthorne in March 1951, and married her three months later. Their daughter was born in 1952, and their son Bruce was born in 1954. Sometime after the birth of his son, Winegar resumed working on his Mechanical Engineering degree at WSC via correspondence courses and credit equivalence courses at U of W. Shortly after completing his degree in 1958, Winegar began working at Standard Oil of California and spent the rest of his career engineering pipelines. In 1971, the Winegar family moved to Oklahoma and remained there until 2001, when Lyle and Jeanne moved to Wichita to be close to their adult son. Lyle Winegar passed away in late 2008, followed by Jeanne in early 2019.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The Lyle Winegar collection consists of 178 film negatives. The majority of the negatives were taken on 120 black and white film, and are 2.25” x 3.25”. The majority of the photographs in this collection were taken by Winegar himself, though the photographs in which he appears were likely taken by friends. All of the photographs here were taken while Winegar was a student at WSC from 1948 to 1950. The photographs document elements of student life in the late 1940s and early 1950s, particularly the lives of on-campus fire fighters.
