Historical Note

Margaret Elizabeth Sitzman Boyd was a faculty member and department head of Home Economics at the University of Wyoming. She was born June 20, 1928, in Greeley, Colorado, where she lived on a farm. Margaret participated in 4-H and later attended Colorado State University, where she graduated in 1950. She completed a dietetics internship and returned to Colorado State University for her master’s degree, which she completed in 1956. She joined the University of Wyoming Department of Home Economics in 1956, under the leadership of Verna Hitchcock. In 1965, her high-altitude baking research led her, and co-author Mamie Schoonover, to write the popular extension cookbook/bulletin Baking at High Altitude. It was a best seller for over 50 years. She retired in 1984. Margaret was married to Geology professor Donald W. Boyd (1927-2020). They were generous supporters of the University of Wyoming and scholarships were established in their honor. Margaret Boyd passed away in Laramie on April 11, 2012.
